Just before the doors closed, a glimpse of Starbuck could be seen puffing on a fumerello, exhaling smoke heavily, as he stared with a worried look on his face, at his friend, Sheba walking out of the room.
Sheba strided down the corridor of the Galactica, leaving the Officer's club and the news Starbuck just told her.
Her face was slightly furrowed, and her heart felt kind of heavy with the thoughts that a Siress, Serina's twin sister no less, had made a comeback from the dead, somewhat, and was aboard the ship.
Why hadn't she recieved a invitation to the dinner tonight, when everyone else had? She wondered to herself over and over again.
Meanwhile, Cassieoppeia made her way to the officer's club, walking down the same corridor as Sheba made her way up it.
"Oh, Sheba, I was just heading to the O.C, want to join to me?" the med tech said, stopping in her path.
Sheba looked up with an obvious far away look in her eyes at Cassieoppeia, then shook her head, to beg off.
"Ahh, no thanks Cassie. I just came from there. I was just heading back to quarters, after my patrol."
Cassieoppeia studied Sheba's face.
"Are you alright Sheba? You look like you're metrons away. Anything the matter?"
Sheba tried to hide her feelings, feigning her smiles.
"I'm fine, just kind of tired. Didn't get mush sleep period last night. Brie was chattering most of the night to me about some new guy she met on the Rising Star last furlon. You know how she is...".
Chuckling along, Cassie understood.
"Oh okay. Well, I guess I'll see you tonight then at the Commander's quarters for dinner?"
Sheba took a shallow breathe and replied.
"Maybe, if I'm not too tired that is. I have another patrol early tomorrow morning".
Sheba walked off in a hurry, as not to engage further in the conversation about the dinner party, she believed she had not been invited to for one reason or another. She couldn't help but feel hurt.
Finally avoiding anyone else, she made it back to her bunk, and took off her jacket, throwing it down on her bed.
As she did so, something fell off the bunk and onto the floor.
Hearing the noise, she looked down on the floor near her feet.
As she picked it up, she began to realize it had the Commander's seal on the stationery.
Her fingers opened it up and she read it.
"To Lieutenant Sheba,
You have been invited to dine in the Commander's quarters tonight at 20:00 centares.
We would be delighted to have you join us in welcoming and celebrating the reunion of Boxy with his aunt, Siress Sarika and her daughter, Pelagia.
We look forward to your company.
Commander Adama."
Sheba was lost for words for a centon, as she had, in vain, thought there was some
mysterious reason for why she hadn't gotten an invite.
She let out a breathe of air, and a relieved smile spread across her face as she went to her locker to find something to wear for dinner.
As she pulled out her favourite dress, she sighed, and pulled her lip in disappointment at her own wardrobe.
Speaking softly outloud, she uttered, "I bet the Siress has more dresses than she knows what to do with, and all the lastest fashions no less.".
She let out another deep sigh, and finished with, "Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go with old faithful again."
She pulled out a white dress that shimmered with spangles, and held the dress hanger with one hand while holding out the dress with the other, studying it with some disdain now, but closed her locker door and headed for the turbo wash.
She decided she would wear her hair up tonight.
She would borrow Gemma's barret for a little sparkle. After all, the Siress would no doubt look most glamourous. She had to make the best of what she had to look her best.
She wondered if Apollo was with the Siress right now, and if so, would he be thinking of Serina's memory. Could he fall in love with her sister?
Sheba didn't want to think any more about it. She grabbed a towel and turned on the facets for the turbo wash and dissappeared into the steam of the wash cubicle.
In the Siress' quarters:
Pelagia and Boxy played Trango on the carpeted floor, as Apollo and the Siress sat talking on a sofa not far away from the children, catching up on lost yahrens.
Apollo grinned as he watched Boxy trying to outsmart his cousin. But Pelagia was just as cunning as Boxy, and knew exactly what he was up to with the dodecahedron.
"If you think you're winning my Empress with your Rogue, you've got another thing coming Boxy. I saw what you did with the dice", Pelagia stated with her chin stern, yet with a glint in her eye, enjoying the company of her long lost cousin.
"I didn't do anything out of the ordinary, Tuppy, and my Emperor has just taken your scholar. That's now ten jelly beans you owe me." Boxy grinned as wide as a galaxy spiral arm.
"What?! You made an bootlegging move! The dodecahedron didn't fall on the number 8 at all, you made a jump that wasn't lawful to the game...you've been skipping all over the board just to get my pieces, and if anyone owes anyone jelly beans, it's you Boxy, and I should be getting at least 20"!
Apollo looked Sarika and shook his head, trying to conceal his laughter at his son being outwitted by his equal at last.
Sarika chuckled softly also trying to contain her laughter at the site of the children bickering playfully.
Finally Apollo straightened his face, with authority in the tone of his voice, he interjected Boxy's next smart response to his cousin.
"Now Boxy, Pelagia's right. You have been cheating all along, to get her board peices. I think you owe your cousin an apology.."
"But daaaadddd..."
"Boxy. You heard me. Now is that any way for a warrior to behave? And to his own blood relative, no less?"
Boxy hung his head down for a few microns, pulling the corner of his mouth, showing a defeated expression.
"Alright Dad." He sighed.
He looked at Pelagia and handed back her Scholar and poured ten brightly coloured jelly beans into her silver bowl.
"Is that all? Only ten?", Pelagia questioned with a look of superiority in her eyes, but she was really only teasing him.
"That's all you're getting Tuppy."
"And you can stop calling me Tuppy. I've been given my adult name now. You forget, I'm two yahrens older to you. Now hand over the remaining ten jelly beans. Nowwwww... ."
Sarika stifled an urge to giggle at her daughter.
Apollo turned his head away also to hide how amused he was at the children.
"I think we went wrong somewhere when we agreed that they could play for jelly beans, Captain", the Siress commented.
"Maybe it would have been better to let them play for cubits..", he added.
The two laughed.
"And, please, call me Apollo.", he smiled at Sarika.
She held her head up and nodded.
"Apollo. And please, call me Sarika. Siress Sarika is such a mouthful".
"Alright."
Apollo seemed to suddenly not know where to look, as he found himself feeling a mixed surge of emotions out of nowhere. He knew she wasn't Serina. But he found the Siress to be equally as captivating as he remembered his late wife to be.
But clearly she had her own personality, different to Serina's.
As she stood up and walked across the room to her luggage, she continued to unpack her clothing to put away in her new wardrobe compartment.
"Will there be many people at tonight's little soireƩ, Apollo?"
Apollo also stood up and walked over near the Siress, answering as he walked.
"Oh, just some of our closet friends. They are very much like family, really. I'm sure they will be delighted to meet you and your daughter."
Sarika glanced up at him and blushed a little.
"Well I'm certainly looking forward to meeting your friends also".
She stopped unpacking for a centon and turned to Apollo with a gentle sympathetic look.
"It must be difficult for you to be raising Boxy all on your own. I'm sure you must miss Serina very much".
Apollo let out a shallow sigh.
"Yes, I do very much. But Boxy is surrounded by a lot of people who love him. My father for one, is very affectionate to him, and takes a lot of time out to teach him many things, that sometimes I may not always have the time to do. As you know I can get very busy with duty. But that's not to say I would ever neglect him. He's my life and soul, and I love him very much".
"I can see that. And I know, Boxy loves you equally so".
There was a pause in their conversation.
"I can only hope, as Boxy's aunt, that we can spend more time together, now that we are re-united. There are many things I would like to add to his overall knowledge. As a blood relative, it is my responsibility to pass down things to him, now that his mother is no longer with us."
"I think Boxy would appreciate that greatly".
Once more they smiled in agreeance, before Apollo, along with Boxy clutching his bag of poorly won jelly beans, bade a short farewell until later that evening, to leave the Siress and her daughter to get ready for the night's feasting and socializing.
Pelagia counted her prized confectionery all over again, gloating at her skill to beat Boxy at Trango.
Sarika just shook her head grinning. Her heart feeling the happiest she had been in yahrens.
Being with her nephew again seem to fill a gap she had been missing.
Sheba strided down the corridor of the Galactica, leaving the Officer's club and the news Starbuck just told her.
